What Is Lifestyle Photography?

Lifestyle photography might be one of the most confusing types of photography. This isn't in the photography itself but in the definition.

So many famous photographers have come up with different definitions, based on their individual perceptions. For instance, one of the most famous photographers, Slim Aarons stated that he was basically taking pictures of attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places. He was invited to the parties of a lot of famous people and would photograph them exactly as they were.

Other photographers like Dixie Dixon believed in creating a mood. Hence, she would photograph people in an environment that others would crave to be in.

However, lifestyle photography has since been referred to as a sort of portrait photography that captures real-life events in an artistic manner. This translates to not creating a scene that is "natural", but documenting events as they happen.

A lot of artists have stuck to this definition and have since used either of the following options as lifestyle photography;

  • Family Shoots

One of the major types of lifestyle photography most photographers gravitate towards is family photography. Family photos are warm, expressive of love, and frankly the epitome of lifestyle photography.

Within this category, you can find children lifestyle photography. Pictures of newborns or kids doing anything are extremely warm and endearing.

  • Commercial Shoots

Recently, it has been noticed that brands and different types of businesses have begun to use photography to promote their merchandise. Increasingly, this is becoming the new wave, as more people are interested in lifestyle and environment.

The commercial has a unique way of promoting more purchases because it sells both product and lifestyle. Hence, brands within the fashion, makeup and beverage industries use lifestyle photography as a strategy.

To achieve this, there are 4 important factors you need to know;

Lifestyle Photography Isn't Planned

The first thing you should note is that lifestyle photography isn't planned. You shouldn't go to a location with an idea of exact shots or poses you would love to capture. Instead, figure out your subject's comfort zones.

Find out what they love to do, where they love to hang out and watch how it all flows naturally.

Lifestyle Photography Doesn't Require Props

Unlike some other types of photography that might require props to be amazing, lifestyle photography is different.

Every single thing present in the environment is a prop; kid's toys, the tv remote, an ice cream cone, literally, anything. You have to be creative and smart with what you've got.

Always Have Your Camera Ready

With lifestyle photography, you cannot afford to miss anything. Life isn't static so you should be ready to capture every amazing shot.  Literally, everything is great content, depending on what kind you need.

Great Lighting

For every type of photography, good lighting is key. Lifestyle photography has to be inviting and attractive, and you can only achieve this with good lighting. Natural light is always a good option for a subtle, simplistic and organic look.

To Wrap It Up

Another important factor is image editing. Having an amazing image editor is a huge plus, this way you can have great photos always
